Supporting the historical society and museum as a sponsor would mean you are taking a special interest and playing an essential role in carrying out one of the most basic parts of our mission: that of being caretakers and stewards of our vast collection of local history artifacts. Our collection consists of thousands of historical items including: books, documents, newspapers, photographs, family history records, archaeological artifacts, period clothing, and more.
EDUCATION and OUTREACH
Education initiatives connected to areas of our local history and heritage are a crucial part of our mission. Annually, the historical society host seven events as part of our speaker series on local history topics that are free for the public to attend. Additionally, the historical society periodically hosts in-service meetings for teachers in the Smyth County School System. These meetings are designed to introduce local teachers to local history institutions and how they might benefit from them.
MUSEUM OPERATIONAL SUPPORT
The Smyth County Historical Society operates the Smyth County Museum in Downtown Marion, Virginia. The museum exhibits items from our collection that are curated together to offer a glimpse into our unique local history for locals and visitors to learn about and enjoy. It also serves as a front in making our collection available to the public for research purposes. Because we want to make our museum as accessible as possible, we do not charge admission. Sponsoring will ensure we are able to keep the doors to the museum open so that visitors and researchers alike can enjoy and make use of what our collection has to offer.
