Frequently Asked Questions

Find quick answers to common questions about donations, research access, our gift shop, and local history.

Do you accept donations of items?

Yes. If you have something to donate, please get in touch with us. We are interested in artifacts, documents, photographs, and other items that represent the history of Smyth County.

Important: Please contact us beforehand. Items left outside of the museum or with someone who is not a representative of the museum cannot be accepted.

To discuss a potential donation, email us at smythcountymuseum@gmail.com or call 276-783-7286.

Are your archival materials available for research?

Yes. We are currently conducting the lengthy process of organizing our archives, so they are not in a state where they can be freely accessed.

Please contact us with your research inquiries so a museum worker can determine whether we have materials that may be useful to you. From there, we will set up an appointment for in-person research.

Can I order items from your gift shop online?

Yes. We have a selection of items (including t-shirts and books) listed in the STORE section of our website.

At this time, you cannot complete checkout online. To order, please email smythcountymuseum@gmail.com with the item(s) you’d like and your mailing address so we can calculate shipping.

What is that big brick building off of exit 39 near Seven Mile Ford?

People passing through on I-81 are often intrigued by the large, abandoned brick home near Exit 39. This is locally known as the Preston-Crockett House.

The home was built in 1842 by John Montgomery Preston and was later inhabited by author Lucy Herndon Crockett. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and in 2022 it was added to Preservation Virginia’s Most Endangered list due to a proposal for a truck stop on the site.

You can find more information online by searching “Preston-Crockett House Seven Mile Ford, Virginia.” To read the National Register application, see: Virginia DHR – NRHP Nomination (PDF).
