

“The Road to Revolution” - A VA250 Event Series


As Virginia commemorates 250 years since the American Revolution, Smyth County is proud to present “Smyth County’s: The Road to Revolution,” an engaging and educational event series that highlights the rich Revolutionary War era history in our region. This special series is presented by the Smyth County VA250 committee and is a collaborative project with all of Smyth County’s local history institutions, the Smyth County Public Library and Visit Smyth County. It invites visitors of all ages to explore the lives of influential figures, the daily realities of frontier life, and the impact of early industrialization.

- March 22, 2025 (10AM-4PM) – The Life & Legacy of Madam Russell:
“Meet” Madam Russell and hear firsthand about her extraordinary life and enduring influence. *at the Museum of the Middle Appalachians – 123 Palmer Avenue. – Saltville, Virginia
- May 17, 2025 (10AM-3PM) – Domestic Life on the Frontier During the Revolution:
Experience daily life on the Virginia frontier with live demonstrations and special presentations showcasing Revolutionary-era domestic skills and traditions. *at the Settlers Museum of SWVA – 1322 Rocky Hollow Rd. – Atkins, Virginia
- June 22, 2025 (3PM) – The Life of John Broady, American Patriot:
Explore the inspiring story of John Broady, an enslaved man who accompanied the Overmountain Men during the Battle of King’s Mountain. His direct descendant, “Scrapper” Broady, will portray John Broady and share insights into his ancestor’s history. *at the Lincoln Theatre – 117 E. Main Street – Marion, Virginia (Presented by the Mt. Pleasant Preservation Society)
- July 12, 2025 (10AM) – Early Industrialization in Virginia:
Discover the history of early industry in Smyth County, including a deep dive into the fascinating Octagon House, home of local industrialist Abijah Thomas. *at the Octagon House – 615 Octagon House Rd. – Marion, Virginia (parking at the Adwolfe Volunteer Fire Department)
- September 21, 2025 (2PM) – Mapping Revolutionary War Soldier Burials in Smyth County:
John Likins will present his extensive research mapping the final resting places of Revolutionary War patriots in Smyth County, many of whom fought in the pivotal Battle of King’s Mountain. *at the Smyth County Museum – 123 East Main St. – Marion, Virginia
