About the Digital Collections

The Smyth County Museum & Historical Society’s Digital Collections serve as a public database of materials from our archives and artifact collections. This site is designed to help visitors, researchers, students, genealogists, and community members discover the wide range of items preserved by the museum.

Records in the Digital Collections may include historic photographs, family papers, local documents, genealogical materials, maps, newspapers, printed items, objects, and other resources connected to the history of Smyth County and Southwest Virginia. Each item record provides information that may help identify, describe, and place the material in historical context.

How to Use This Site

You can begin exploring the Digital Collections in two main ways. Use Browse Items to search through individual records in the database, or use Browse Collections to view materials grouped by subject, collection, or theme.

Many records function as a finding aid, meaning they describe materials held by the museum even when a full digital image or document is not available online. If an item does not include a viewable image or file, it may still be available for in-person research at the Smyth County Museum.

Some collections are available in full digital form, including a growing section dedicated to Smyth County’s Black history and other curated topics that highlight the diverse people, places, and stories of our community.

Viewing Materials in Person

Unless otherwise noted, materials listed in the Digital Collections are freely available for in-person viewing at the Smyth County Museum. Researchers are encouraged to contact the museum before visiting so staff can help determine whether specific materials are available, accessible, or require special handling.

Copies and Requests

The museum is working toward an online request system that will allow visitors to order digital or physical copies of select documents and photographs. Until that system is available, visitors may contact the museum directly with questions about specific items, research requests, or reproduction options.
